Machern castle park and garden

Former moated castle in Machern

Castle and landscape garden in Machern ©Kati Lange

The castle was built as a moated castle and was subject to remodelling and extensions over the centuries. It got its current appearance as a three-winged Baroque complex after the Thirty Years' War. After expropriation in 1946, the castle passed into community ownership and was then used as a cultural centre, restaurant and apartments.
In 1990, it was extensively restored with public funds and has been a treasured part of the area ever since. Today, the castle serves as a meeting place, regularly hosting cultural events such as theatrical performances, concerts and exhibitions, as well as conferences, seminars and family celebrations. Last but not least, the castle has also made a name for itself as a romantic wedding palace through the registry office located in the historic Knights' Room.

Particularly noteworthy is the extensive adjacent park, created in the English style at the end of the 18th century by the last imperial count, Carl Heinrich August von Lindenau, who was inspired by his numerous trips abroad. Garden architect E.W. Glasewald designed the garden buildings, the pyramid, the Hygieia temple and the imposing ruins of the knight's castle.
The historic Machern castle park can be wonderfully explored on individual tours. Special tours for school classes or children's birthday parties are also offered.
