As war production intensified in preparation for World War II, the Stelzenhaus was built between 1937 and 1939 as an extension of the Grohmann & Frosch corrugated sheet metal factory and galvanising plant in Plagwitz. The company manufactured sheet metal for submarine and aircraft construction and was therefore classified as important for the war. The Stelzenhaus is one of the most interesting examples of modern industrial buildings in Leipzig.

Architect Hermann Böttcher was responsible for the plans. He created the plans for an outstanding example of industrial architecture and the successor of classical modernism. The focus is on the functionality of the building. Even the building's construction materials – brick and concrete – emphasise this. The architect designed the reinforced concrete structure on high "Stelzen" (stilts) because of the lack of space, thus giving the building its name: The massive warehouse hovers, so to speak, above the Karl Heine Canal - which is a rarity.

It was difficult to build directly on the Elster-Saale-Canal because the plot itself is directly on the canal's embankment. Nevertheless, this location was chosen because of the plans to extend the canal to the Elbe. This would have made a connection to Hamburg harbour possible. 101 concrete pillars were anchored in the canal to support the building's foundation slab and support the industrial building's four parts. The front juts out over the canal.

Today the building is home to a studio, offices and a restaurant.
