Northeast of Wurzen on the edge of the Dahlener Heide, the white and red painted Thammenhain Castle is reflected in the Schwanteich. Since its reconstruction in 1890/91 in the Neo-Renaissance style, it has been characterized by the projecting gables, the double terrace and the tower on the south side. The ensemble lacks the baroque-style tower cap and the court church, which was demolished in 1949. On the ground floor, the Gothic cross-ribbed vaults bear witness to the original moated castle.
In the middle of the extensive landscape park, the castle offers space for relaxation and discovery. Visitors can enjoy the rose beds, rhododendrons and the backdrop of the striking park trees such as the ginkgo, the enormous copper beech and the centuries-old pedunculate oaks as they walk around the pond. The yellow pine and the spindle oak "champion trees" are a source of astonishment. The arcade dates back to the Baroque period - a rarity in Saxony. You can take a raft across to the island in the castle pond.
Rüdiger and Elisabeth von Schönberg have opened the castle and park to visitors. The oak-paneled ballroom with the walk-in ancestral gallery and the portraits of the ancestors who have returned home gives wedding and family celebrations an almost unique ambience. But the events, concerts and discussions offered in the castle also become an unforgettable experience. Guests who want to enjoy their celebration to the fullest can stay in apartments and suites in the castle as well as in the holiday homes in the park.
