The Old Johannisfriedhof Leipzig with its tombs of famous personalities from music, culture, politics as well as its romantic atmosphere is a "must".
The oldest municipal cemetery in Leipzig, with its green ivy tendrils, decorative tombs and old trees, has an enchanted atmosphere that invites friends of history and romance to linger. Directly behind the museums in the Grassi is the historic Johannisfriedhof with its eventful history and the graves of many famous people. Duke Georg designated this place as an official burial site as early as 1536 and a lot has happened in Leipzig since then, of which the cemetery bears witness. Today, no more burials take place here and so the cemetery serves as a memorial to Leipzig's history, from music to science to politics. Famous people whose graves can still be visited here today include the museum founder Franz Dominic Grassi, Richard Wagner's mother and his sister and Luther's companion Dr. Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach.
