Barockschloss Delitzsch

Short facts

Come and discover the beautiful Barockschloss Delitzsch and learn about the history in the museum.

Delitzsch Baroque Palace
Est built as a medieval moated castle, the building served as a travel residence for Saxon rulers and the accommodation of the sovereign's office administration.

At the first remodelling, the palace received its Renaissance style. After the division of Saxony and with the takeover of the principality of Saxony-Merseburg, the palace was chosen as the widow's seat for duchesses.

The renewed reconstruction gives the ensemble its French character. From 1860 onwards, the residence was used as a women's prison for a number of years until the city of Delitzsch finally bought the castle and the museum moved in. Today, the baroque castle houses the town museum, the tourist information, a sound vault, the registry office and the district music school.

In addition the 50-metre-high observation tower offers very good views. From the highest level of the tower, there is a wonderful view of the historic town centre and the surrounding area. On a clear day you can see Leipzig and the Petersberg near Halle.

Museum in the baroque palace of Delitzsch
Here you can see the life, the splendidly furnished living quarters of the duchess dowagers of Saxe-Merseburg and the everyday life of the servants in the Delitzsch ladies' palace. There is also information on the history of the castle and the town. Special exhibitions are devoted to political and cultural history.

Strolling in the baroque garden
The French-style pleasure garden, originally laid out in 1692 and 1693, now has a "parterre de broderie" again, reminiscent of embroidery with its broken-brick ornaments. The fan-shaped sycamore avenues provide welcome shade in summer.

Dream wedding in the castle
Romantic couples can say their wedding vows in the baroque castle. In a special ambience, the wedding room is available for the civil ceremony, and the baroque garden or the ducal audience hall are excellent photo backdrops for original wedding shots. Whoever strokes the shoulder of the friendly Star-Talent figurine right at the entrance to the castle is said to be lucky.
