Altranstädt Castle was founded around 1200 as a monastery estate by Cistercian monks. The three-wing complex was built at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century. It had several owners, most recently the Hohenthal family (until 1945).
On September 24, 1706, European history was made in Altranstädt Castle with the so-called "Peace of Altranstädt" between the Swedish King Charles XII and the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong. The "Peace Room" in the castle, which has been furnished largely in its original form, still bears witness to this event. It also commemorates the "Altranstädt Convention" a year later. Today, Altranstädt is one of the historically interesting places in Saxony.
There are also many plans for the future, such as the establishment of a Swedish-Polish-German meeting place. The "Altranstädt Castle Friends Association" is committed to this and to the gradual renovation of the buildings and is always happy to hear from interested parties.
Some rooms and the vaulted room on the ground floor of the castle can be used for celebrations and parties of all kinds, events and seminars.
hiking tip: The family-friendly tour around Markranstädt runs for about 4 km through the town, the poplar grove and along the Kulkwitzer Lake.
