The Leipzig City Tunnel is the heart of the Central German S-Bahn network: It offers a direct rail connection between the main station and the Bavarian station. The City Tunnel thus enables a fast north-south connection through Leipzig. The newly constructed tunnel stations are 17 to 22 meters below ground level. In this way, the Leipzig City Tunnel makes all regional train traffic faster, more efficient and more comfortable. Since December 15, 2013, six new S-Bahn lines have connected the Central German economic area around Halle and Leipzig with the surrounding area more quickly and efficiently. In this way, the City Tunnel optimally connects the airport, the trade fair and the city center with the surrounding medium-sized and large centers such as Halle, Bitterfeld, Altenburg, Wurzen or Eilenburg as far as Hoyerswerda, Oschatz or Zwickau.
