Colditz Castle
Prisoner-of-war camp, insane asylum, hospital: Colditz Castle near Leipzig looks back on a moving history. It was once a magnificent hunting lodge and later a symbol of the desire for freedom. The unrenovated state of many rooms gives the place a unique lost-place character. The castle has been empty for years, but its walls hold centuries of secrets. Since April 17, 2024, they have been brought back to life with the "HistoPad" tablet guide.
Visitors get to know the Renaissance castle of Frederick the Wise in the 16th century and digitally enter the once stately chambers. The Second World War period, when Colditz Castle was a prisoner of war camp for high-ranking officers of the Western Allies, is also brought to life. Guests learn more about the creative escape attempts of the prisoners and can test at an experience station whether they would have succeeded in escaping from Colditz Castle with the help of a glider. It is also possible to go on a treasure hunt with a tablet. Contemporary witness reports bring the Colditz hospital chapter back to life. The interactive castle tour is guaranteed to give you goosebumps!
Tip: If you want to discover even more interesting and exciting facts, you will find them in the castle's calendar of events. There is a wide range of public guided tours to choose from. In addition, guided tours for groups can be booked individually in German or English.
More about Colditz Castle and the interactive journey through the centuries with the HistoPad can be listened to in the podcast "Willkommen in Leipzig.
