Visible from afar, built on the top of Rochlitz Hill, the 27-meter high Observation tower is one of the landmarks of Rochlitz. Built entirely from local red porphyry tuff, it is an embodiment of the volcanic rock of the mountain, which was formed 275 million years ago and is unique worldwide in its colour, form, and composition. In memory of King Friedrich August II. († 1854), who visited the mountain forest several times during his lifetime, a committee decided in 1855 to erect a monument to him on the Rochlitz Hill. Construction took four years. Tourist traffic continued to increase significantly with the construction of the lookout tower and the "Waldschlösschen" mountain café. When visibility is good, the tower offers a sweeping panoramic view of the Erzgebirge ridge, the Battle of the Nations Monument in Leipzig and the Collmberg near Oschatz.
