The small village of Schaddel is idyllically situated on the river Mulde near the town of Grimma. At the beginning of the 1970s, fellow artists settled in the village's old water mill. They founded the "Schaddelmühle" college of visual artists and set up studios and workshops that enabled a very diverse range of work and production of unique pieces as well as serial ceramics.
Today, the former mill serves as the geoportal “Earths of Ceramics” and provides information about the rich history of the ceramic industry and ceramic crafts and organizes workshops and ceramic courses for artists and interested parties under professional supervision.
The transformer house at the entrance to the Schaddelmühle has been converted into an information point for the Geopark "Porphyryland. Stone Kingdom in Saxony". Here, visitors can obtain general information about the Geopark Porphyryland and its themes, explanations of the genesis of the clays and kaolin from the crystalline porphyries, and an introduction to historical evidence of industrial ceramic production in our region.
