Geoportal - Schaddelmühle Grimma

Short facts

Information on the history of the ceramic industry and crafts, workshops for artists / art courses. Offers for children and young people.

The small village Schaddel is idyllically situated on the river Mulde near the city of Grimma. At the beginning of the 1970s, artists settled in the old watermill. They founded the Schaddelmühle and set up studios and workshops that allowed very diverse work and production of unique pieces, including ceramics.
Today, as a geoportal, "The Earth of Ceramics" is inspired by the rich history of the ceramics industry, and organises workshops and ceramics courses under professional guidance for artists and interested parties.
The transformer station at the entrance to the "Schaddelmühle" was converted to an information point to the Geopark "Porphyrland. Stone Kingdom in Saxony“ Here you will find general information about Geopark Porphyrland with its topics, explanations of the genesis of the clays and kaolin in the crystalline porphyries as well as an introduction to historical issues in industrial ceramics production.
