The town of Grimma is located in the southeastern part of the Leipzig region. Its location on the Mulde makes it picturesque and it is surrounded by lovely hills. The historic center of Grimma is also a little paradise. The old town center was recently voted the most beautiful in Central Germany. The over 400-meter-long, well-preserved city wall with its delicate little houses contains numerous magnificent monuments from different eras: Grimma Castle and the Frauenkirche from the 12th century, the medieval residential towers, the monastery church, the former St. Augustin State and Princely School and the Renaissance town hall. The monastery church is a stop on the Luther Trail, as the reformer preached here several times. A walk through the old town takes you to the banks of the Mulde with the remarkable Pöppelmann Bridge, which, like the old town, was lavishly and masterfully renovated after the floods of the century in 2002 and 2013. The imposing Gattersburg, a fairytale turreted villa belonging to a paper manufacturer, now a hotel, stands at the pier. At its feet is the 80 m long suspension bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Saxony. The monastery and mill day begins from there with many walking and cycling paths through the beautiful valley landscape. It is also romantic upstream, at the Nimbschen monastery ruins, which commemorate the escape of Katharina von Bora, Martin Luther's later wife and companion. From there, a historic cable ferry takes you to the small town of Höfgen opposite, the "village of the senses". There, ancient mill wheels still clatter, there is a "ringing tower" and the Höfgen monument forge with innovative sculptures and experimental works of art. The orchards, in turn, invite you to take a fragrant walk.
Tips:
- On the Mulde: with the MS Katharina von Bora or the MS Gattersburg to the “village of the senses” Höfgen or explore on your own with a paddle or rowing boat
- Enjoy coffee and cake in the café “Tortenträumerei” with a truly dreamlike courtyard at the city wall and a view of the Mulde
- Visit Germany's only publisher's museum, which is dedicated to Georg Joachim Göschen. His authors included great poets such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. The terraced garden with a pavilion from around 1800 is magical.
