Krochsiedlung - Architecture in Leipzig

The Krochsiedlung is one of the most important examples of classical modernist architecture in Leipzig.

The Krochsiedlung was built between 1929 and 1930. The joint project by architects Paul Mebes, Paul Emmerich, Johannes Koppe, Adolf Muesmann and Max Fricke is located in Leipzig's Gohlis district. The Jewish banker Hans Kroch, who also commissioned the Krochhaus in Goethestrasse, co-financed the project.
The Kroch estate was planned as the first construction phase of a planned residential area called "Neu-Gohlis". The nearby Church of Reconciliation was to be at the center of the new estate. However, the project was never completed. At the time, the residential area embodied modern residential culture, which helped to alleviate the housing shortage in the late Weimar Republic. To this day, the three- and four-storey apartment buildings contain 1018 apartments with conservatories characteristic of the Bauhaus, which were extensively renovated in the 1990s.

In order to preserve the architectural and historical heritage of the Krochsiedlung, the "Bürgerverein Krochsiedlung e.V." was founded in 1991.
