Siegfried the III of Mügeln founded the Cistercian convent in 1241. The house rules were: voluntary poverty, abstinence, and obedience. Ora et labora = pray and work. The nuns established fruit production, planted medicinal herbs and bred fish in the monastery pond. Even here, discipline in the time of the Reformation began to crumble. Six nuns from Sornzig fled after receiving word of the successful escape of Katharina of Bora from the Nimbschen convent. Those who helped them were beheaded. Today, you can stay comfortably in the extensively renovated Sisters' House. Events like the blossom festival and the annual Christmas Market in the monastery courtyard draw countless visitors.
