MDR Kubus (Cube)

Short facts

  • Leipzig
  • Venue, , Entertainment

The Cube at Augustusplatz was specially built for rehearsals and sound recordings by the MDR Radio Choir and the MDR Symphony Orchestra.

The Dresden architect Peter Kulka designed the shiny black cube, which connects to the Gewandhaus and was completed in 2001. Musicians and choir members can use the fully air-conditioned glass bridge to go directly to MDR concerts in the Gewandhaus.

The bridge also symbolises that Augustusplatz does not have two separate music venues, but rather a large musical centre in the heart of Leipzig. Both the MDR Radio Choir and the MDR Symphony Orchestra rehearse in the Cube. No other orchestra in Europe is as closely associated with the development of radio as the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1924.
