The open-cast mining history of the Leipzig region lives on in the Mining Technology Park. Leipzig's New Lake District owes its existence to the huge open-cast mining cranes.
As unbelievable as it may seem, the beautiful bathing lakes in Leipzig's New Lake District owe their existence to the region's mining past. After the old opencast mining pits were flooded and converted into local recreational oases, today there is little to remind us of the mining chapter in Leipzig's history. However, if you look into the distance at Markkleeberger Lake or Störmthal Lake, you will see the huge opencast mining machines that are part of the Mining Technology Park as industrial artifacts. The park can be explored on your own with the help of display boards or an audio guide, or on a guided tour with former employees of the Espenhain opencast mine. The Mining Technology Park clearly shows the processes of brown coal mining - and the gigantic machines alone are worth a visit.

South of Leipzig, the past, present and future of open-cast lignite mining meet. While lignite is still actively mined in two open-cast mining areas, day-trippers and tourists experience and enjoy the recultivation and renaturation landscape of Leipzig's New Lake District right next door. And right in the middle of it all, the 5,4-hectare mining technology park allows visitors to experience the mining cycle of an open-cast lignite mine, from groundwater lowering to coal extraction and overburden movement to remediation.

The Mining Technology Park is one of three West Saxon stations on the Route of Industrial Culture in Saxony. The highlights of the exhibition are two large machines, the 1.300-ton bucket wheel excavator 1547 and the 2.400-ton spreader 1115. Built by the TAKRAF company in the 80s, they are unique artifacts of engineering. Specially prepared child-friendly texts and audio guides inform young visitors about geology and technology, but also remind them of the miners and the numerous "lost places" that had to make way for brown coal. The Tertiary adventure playground informs young and old guests about the formation of brown coal.

Every Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays, at 11 a.m. (or by appointment), former miners from the Espenhain open-cast mine give knowledgeable and entertaining tours of the site and the exhibitions.
