200 years ago, the Emperor Napoleon left his mark on the Battle of Großgörschen on 2 May 1813 near Pegau. Between Werben and Großgörschen lies the Monarchenhügel. From there, the Russian Tsar and the Prussian King watched the battle against Napoleon. Prussia and the Russians retreated that evening, leaving 35,000 victims in just 7 hours.
After the battle, Emperor Napoleon spent the night on 3 May 1813 in the house of the merchant Richter at the church square. So many wounded lay in the streets of Pegau, that the town hall also served as a military hospital.
The Pegau-based chronicler Friederich August Fissel, who used pen and ink to recount the battle of Großgörschen, told eyewitness accounts. The painting hangs in the museum of the city Pegau.
