The former Stasi bunker is located in the middle of the “Lübschützer Teiche” recreation area, about 30 km east of Leipzig. The Ministry for State Security built the bunker here at the end of the 1960s as an alternative command post for the head of the Leipzig District Administration for State Security. The approximately 100-man command staff around the Leipzig Stasi chief was supposed to continue its work here in the event of a war.
The underground facility was kept operational until 1989 in order to continue the secret police activities from there and to maintain the SED regime's claim to power in the event of a state of emergency. Today, the original bunker is open to visitors. An exhibition shows the tasks of the Ministry for State Security in an emergency: from widespread surveillance of the population to prepared isolation camps for opposition members.
