Two Bronze Age burial mounds at Frauwalde testify to early settlement in the area. The State Office of Archeology in Dresden dates it in the period from about 1,400 to 900 BCE. In the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History (a geoportal of the Geopark Porphyry) visitors will see archaeological finds of the Neolithic, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Sorbian settlement period and the German re-population era. As the archaeological finds have proven, however, the settlement history of the area goes as far back as the Paleolithic period. Saxon geologists developed their theory of Pleistocene inland glaciation around 1844 from the glaciers discovered at the Hohburg "Kleiner Berg".
