Short facts

In Höfgen near Grimma, you can find the "water mill", a technical display with a museum exhibition, and the attached historical guest house "Zur Wassermühle".

In the historical heart of the idyllic village of Höfgen near Grimma, you can find the "water mill", a technical display with a museum exhibition, and the attached historical guest house "Zur Wassermühle". The water mill was first documented in 1721. Until 1954, it was used as a flour mill.

The mill is propelled by an overshot waterwheel, through which the required water is fed through a channel above. The mill drive is an invention of the late middle-ages and its use in Germany can be traced back to the 14th century. Through the cogs, shafts, and belts, the force is transmitted to the grinders. At the end of the 19th century, the technology, among other things was expanded by a transmission, a roller and elevators.

The mill has been open as a public museum since 1976. It gives visitors an extensive look into the functioning mill technology and the former working and living conditions of millers. In four former living and utility rooms, visitors can view historically-furnished miller's living quarters. While not authentically decorated, but rather adapted, this exhibition contains treasures of differing origins.
