The Nimbschen Monastery near Grimma is closely associated with Martin Luther. He frequently stopped in Grimma and railed against the indulgence trade. His reformatory ideas also penetrated into the nearby Cistercian monastery "Marienthron" in Nimbschen, where since the end of the 13th century around 40 nuns were housed. Nine nuns, including Katharina von Bora, the future wife of Martin Luther, succeeded in escaping from the monastery in 1523. After the death of the last abbess, the monastery was dissolved in 1536, leaving the buildings to decay.
Those who come to Nimbschen today will find a modern hotel complex in the former stables and storage facilities of the old monastery estate. The buildings were expanded with great effort and attention to detail.
