Observation tower on the Bistumshöhe

In order to create something striking in the area of the renaturalized Cospuden Lake, use was made of an existing elevation - the "Bistumshöhe". An observation tower was erected on this in the south-western area of the lake, which impresses with its openwork wooden construction. There was already a lookout point with a table and bench here in the past. From here, the Zwenkau open-cast mine could be viewed wonderfully. Incidentally, the origin of the term "Bistumshöhe" goes back to much earlier times. The area is said to have belonged to the diocese of Merseburg.

The observation tower itself has no name. It was built in a short period of time and using the so-called chimney construction method. This is reminiscent of the former chimneys that shaped the landscape in the south of Leipzig for decades and have now almost all disappeared.

Extremely robust and low-maintenance you can enjoy a fascinating view from the observation tower on all sides . From the top, you can see not only Lake Cospuden but also the surrounding tipping area of the open-cast mines Zwenkau and Espenhain, the reforested "Neue Harth" and the Family amusement park Belantis . In good weather, you also have an excellent view of Leipzig's landmarks to the north.
