During the almost 600-year history of the university, students in particular have always played a major role in the city's musical life. They participated in the Collegia musica of Telemann and Bach, played in coffee houses, in the opera or in Leipzig churches and formed choirs. For example, the St. Pauli University Choir, founded in 1822, which was led by Max Reger in 1907/08.
Many musical events were closely linked to the university church until the church was blown up in 1968 at the instigation of the SED leadership. Today, the Paulinum, which looks like a church from the outside, is located on the same site and combines the university auditorium and a prayer room on the inside. The new building is intended to commemorate the former university church of St. Pauli.
