Spice up

The historic town of Wurzen, near the Mulde River, lies in the east of the Leipzig region. A stroll through the town center reveals impressive witnesses to its more than 1050-year history: the towers of sacred buildings and the imposing Wurzen Castle. In the 16th century, this castle, along with St. Mary's Cathedral, served as the residence of the bishops of Meissen. Magnificent buildings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as houses with rich Art Nouveau facades, also characterize the townscape. The nearby idyllic town park with its round tower is also an inviting place to linger. A landmark visible from afar are the two imposing towers of the former Krietschmühle mill, a traditional site for baked goods and food production. But it's not just the charming old town that attracts many visitors to this picturesque town every year. Wurzen is also known as the birthplace of the writer, painter, and cabaret artist Joachim Ringelnatz. The memorial in the birthplace of Ringelnatz, who is known above all for his satirical and grotesque poems, which are included in every school textbook, is worth seeing and entertaining. 

The city is surrounded by the unique river landscape of the Mulde – the idyllic Wurzener Land, characterized by gently rolling natural landscapes, extensive forests, and vast floodplains, home to many rare plant and animal species. These are habitats for otters, beavers, honey buzzards, white-tailed eagles, great crested newts, and brook lampreys. The Wachtelberg near Wurzen is home to Germany's oldest natural monument for endangered plants.
