The former largest cotton spinning mill in continental Europe is known far beyond the borders of Leipzig and is one of the most interesting production and exhibition sites for contemporary art and culture.
Since the end of cotton yarn production in 1992, a good 100 artists' studios as well as eleven galleries and exhibition spaces have settled here, forming a center of the Leipzig art scene that is unrivaled anywhere in the world. One of the pioneers of the revival is none other than the famous painter Neo Rauch.
Particularly popular are the Spinnerei-Tours, during which several thousand visitors discover the site and admire the impressive exhibitions. In addition to artists, the Spinnerei also a place for architects, designers, jewelry and fashion makers. With the LURU cinema, the "Residenz" theater, printing works and the non-profit HALLE 14, the area also forms a large cultural center.
