St. Nikolaikirche Bad Düben

The church was built towards the end of the 12th century as the seat of an archpriest of the diocese of Meissen.

The 63-metre-high church tower of St. Nikolai can be seen from afar. The church was built towards the end of the 12th century as the seat of an archpriest of the diocese of Meissen. Despite several renovations, it remained Romanesque at its core. In 1661, the church burnt down, but the tower with bells (the oldest still in existence today from the 14th century) was preserved. Around 1816/17, the nave was rebuilt with neoclassical decoration of the hall by Carlo Ignacio Pozzi from Dessau. In the tradition of the Reformation and in the spirit of the Enlightenment of Classicism, the altar, pulpit and organ (sacrament, word and music) have since formed the center around which the congregation gathers.
In 1887, the octagonal upper storey of the tower was raised and redesigned to accommodate the doorman's apartment, which was occupied until 1904. The church houses two figures from the Baroque high altar, dating from the 17th century to the 18th century, in the upper pulpit area standing: Moses and Christ, the Salvator; pulpit and altar from 1816/17, a baptismal font from 1907 standing in the church hall, a rare altarpiece: Woman at Jacob's Well from the 2nd half of the 19th century.
In 1907, the 6th organ in the history of the town church was installed by organ builder Wilhelm Rühlmann (Zörbig) in the predecessor case of the organ from 1819 (Johann Carl Friedrich Lochmann). After becoming completely unplayable due to water damage during construction work in the 1990s, the organ was completely restored and returned to its original 1907 condition by organ builder Christian Scheffler Sieversdorf in 2008.
