In the heart of the old town, you can stroll through shops and admire extraordinary architecture. Mushroom-shaped metal columns that tower prominently into the sky are the trademark of the Strohsackpassage. Since the new commercial building and passage opened in 1997, restaurants, shops, a walk-in clock and the
Lancaster University Leipzig - the first campus of a British university in Germany - under one roof. The passage owes its name Strohsack to the community center at Ritterstrasse 7, which was integrated into the commercial building complex.
A special feature is Europe's largest floor clock, whose hands depict a male and a female figure. It is fully functional and can be walked on. In the middle there is a 13-meter-high atrium, which is enhanced by numerous sculptures.
