Leipzig residents know and love the smell! Every year in April and May, there is a veritable explosion of scent in the floodplain forest when wild garlic sprouts from the ground. The floodplain area covers 5900 hectares and stretches from Zwenkau to the northwestern border of Saxony. Although the city divides the Leipzig floodplain forest into two parts, parks and green spaces connect them again. Thus, the greenery of the floodplain forest extends beyond the Rosental, Clara Zetkin Park, and Johanna Park, all the way to the city center. Wild garlic thrives in the damp, shady undergrowth here. From May onwards, its blossoms cover the Leipzig forest floor, spreading their wonderful fragrance everywhere. Stroll through the floodplain forest and breathe deeply.
