Hiking and pilgrimages in the Leipzig Region
Hiking holiday and city experience - a successful combination
Leipzig is not only a remarkably green city, but also provides a true rarity. One of the biggest lowland forests in Central Europe extends through the region to the centre of the city. One very special highlight is the lowland forest station with a multimedia discovery trail. Children will especially enjoy getting to know and exploring one of the most beautiful and valuable natural environments in the region.
Rich in compact woodlands and wild, romantic riverscapes along the Mulde and Elbe rivers, the area has been known as a hiking region for many decades. For example, the "beaver tour" in the Düben Heath nature park is known as a high-quality hiking trail. But that's not all: Superb pine groves and extensive mixed-forest woodlands shape the conservation area of the Dahlen Health, which span over 150 km², and guarantee that every active tourist will have an unforgettable experience.
Where the landscape was defined by mining over 20 years ago, it has now evolved into an area with many lakes whose total water surface area of almost 70 km² provides a stunning hiking experience in the region around Leipzig. In addition to water, the Leipzig New Lake District offers the best conditions for stress-free hiking.
In the Saxon Land of Castles, proud defensive fortifications are enthroned on the shore of the Mulde river and Zschopau, including the 1000-year-old Mildenstein Castle or Saxony's most beautiful knight's castle, the Kriebstein Castle. Or follow the well-known Luther Trail in Saxony. The 550-km-long circular hiking trail runs through the scenic and diverse Leipzig region. Marked with a green "L" on a white background, the Luther Trail connects to 27 places where the Reformation left its mark.
