The Slavic hamlet of Dobrisiee
Doberschütz was first mentioned in a document in 1314. Since the history of the municipality of Bettaune, which belongs to Doberschütz, can be traced back around 1000 years, it is assumed that the Sorbian hamlet was founded much earlier. The name Dobrisiee, later Doberschütz, indicates the Sorbian origin of the place through its final syllable. It is unclear whether the Franks founded the street village, which can still be seen in the historic center today, before the mention in 1314. During the Thirty Years' War, enemy troops devastated the town. Only about 30 Doberschützers survived. The devastating village fires of 20 and 1829 also destroyed a large part of the town. During the second district reform in the GDR in 1849, Doberschütz was attached to the Eilenburg district in the Leipzig district, which was incorporated into the Delitzsch district in 1952. The municipalities of Battaune, Doberschütz, Mörtitz, Paschwitz, Sprotta and Wöllnau merged to form the municipality of Doberschütz on 1994 January 1.
Things to See in Doberschütz
The town's attractions include the Witrowberg in Paschwitz with the Witrow Church, built around the 10th century. It was located in the middle of the old churchyard on an artificial elevation and was named the high church of Witrow because of its location. Another highlight in Doberschütz is the Friedemann tower windmill. It is the only wind-operated windmill in the region. A visit to the village church of Saint Martin in Battaune is also worthwhile. Here you will find a late Gothic carved altar and a very valuable wall painting.
In the Winkelmühle district there is the smallest public cemetery in Europe: the Winkelmühle forest cemetery. It measures an area of around 260 square meters and has only 15 graves.
Experience traditional cuisine
After an extensive tour of the Düben Heath, the Doberschütz rest stop invites you to dine and relax. Here, visitors can enjoy good, traditional cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. It is also possible to stay overnight in the guest house. The rooms can also be rented for weddings or similar events. The Lindencafé next to the rest stop provides for your physical well-being. In the family-friendly little room, you can linger over coffee and cake on the summer terrace and enjoy the view of the beautifully landscaped garden.
Doberschütz' most famous personality
The most famous son of the community is none other than the successful discus thrower Manfred Grieser, who was born on May 9, 1938. The greatest successes of his sporting career include two championship titles in the GDR championship. In both 1957 and 1959 he achieved the best results and won the gold medals in the discus throw.
Diverse excursion destinations in idyllic landscapes
The Dübener Heide Nature Park stretches north of Doberschütz. It is particularly suitable for long walks, bike tours, hikes and horseback rides in the largest contiguous mixed forest area in central Germany. The river landscapes and lakes in the nature park invite you to paddle boat tours and folding boat tours. The beaver area at Lutherstein or the charcoal kiln at Eisenhammer are also worth seeing. Whether you are taking a walk in the forest or a long hike - many signposted paths and trails lead to the most charming corners of the region.
Starting from Doberschütz, you can reach the nature conservation project “Presseler Heidewald und Moorgebiet.” Beavers and cranes have settled here. Nature lovers can get an interesting overview of the flora and fauna of the heath and moorland on the six-kilometer-long “Pressel Nature Trail.” Due to the many rest areas, the trail is well suited for families with children.
