Cavertitz – Southern Gate to the Dahlener Heide

© Andreas Schmidt

The municipality of Cavertitz with its 12 districts is located on the southern edge of the Dahlener Heide. The scenic region offers numerous opportunities for active leisure activities and has been a popular local recreation destination for many years. Interesting excursion destinations include the former manor house or the historic post mill.

Cavertitz between the wars

Cavertitz and its districts look back on a long history: In the course of the German settlement in the east, the Burgward of Cavertitz was built around 900. The town was first mentioned in documents in 1240 and came into the possession of the Saxon electors after the secularization of the monastery in the 16th century. In the 13th century, the manor house in Cavertitz was finally built. During the Thirty Years' War, the town was destroyed by Swedish troops and belonged to Prussia for three years from 1815. Thanks to the commitment of the citizens, Cavertitz was then returned to the Kingdom of Saxony. The demolition of the castle by the manor owner Bramsch after the end of the Second World War was prevented thanks to the efforts of the Russian officer Konkow and some teachers. The castle was later converted into a school and celebrated its inauguration in 1946 as Saxony's first central school. The Cavertitz primary school has been located here since 2003.

Experience culture and history in the town center

A cultural gem in the Cavertitz district is the Protestant parish church from the 12th century. Despite numerous reconstructions, the former fortified church has retained its Romanesque character. It contains a short hall with a recessed choir and apse, as well as a tower the width of the hall.
The Sachsen Stud Farm, also known as “Gut Steinle”, is also located in the city center. It has been located on the site of the former manor since 1992 and has been dedicated to horse breeding and boarding since then.
A small exhibition with historic carriages and a riding stable can be visited by appointment. The complex also includes the manor's castle, which is now used as a school.

Regional Saxon food

If you are looking for a cozy place to stop by the lake in the middle of the Dahlener Heide forest, the "Hotel and Restaurant Pelzer" is the place for you. Regional food and drinks are served here. It is also possible to stay overnight in the hotel.
Another tip is the "Highlanderhof Lampertswalde", whose name the inn owes to the graceful cattle from the Scottish highlands. There, on the edge of the Dahlender Heide, nature lovers, hikers and cyclists can stay overnight and enjoy the peace and quiet.

In addition to beef from Highlander cattle and pork from their own slaughter, the restaurant also boasts "Sylvia's Ice Barn" - a family-run farm that offers a wide range of high-quality ice cream and coffee specialties. In addition to the restaurant, there are also many opportunities for sporting activities, romantic carriage rides through the heath and a sauna with an outdoor swimming pool in the house.

Cavertitz's famous son

The German architect Christian Friedrich Exner is one of the famous sons of the town of Cavertitz. He was born on May 13, 1718 in Lampertswalde and became well known as a representative of Dresden Rococo. Numerous buildings in Dresden bear Exner's signature: for example, he was involved in the construction of the Dresden Kreuzkirche, was involved in the work on the Japanese Palace and led the reconstruction of the "Fürstenberg House".

event highlights in the castle park

Highlights in the Cavertitz event calendar are year-round events in the castle park with the castle café: For example, from spring to autumn, the "Twilight Culture" takes place once a month in the castle park: The Theatre de Luna combines professional theatre with amateur actors in the natural setting and offers an impressive play of light and shadow. Visitors can also attend events in the castle park and the castle café all year round, such as (open air) concerts, readings or the traditional autumn and wine festival.

Diverse excursion destinations in idyllic landscapes

As a popular local recreation area, the region's attractive landscape offers visitors peace and relaxation. The closely linked and well-signposted cycle and hiking trails allow hikers and cyclists alike to enjoy active recreation. There is a connection to the Leipzig-Elbe cycle route cycle route network and the international Elbe cycle path. For all animal lovers, the riding trails in the heath and forests as well as the animal enclosure with native wildlife in Schöna are recommended.
If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, you cannot miss a trip to the new shooting range in Sörnewitz. National shooting competitions are held here several times a year.
South of the Dahlener Heide is the Zeuckritz post mill, which can be seen from afar when coming from Dahlen. It is located on the road from Bucha to Zeuckritz in the direction of Schöna and is a destination for numerous day-trippers, holidaymakers and school classes. The old mill was in operation until 1954. Today, visits are only possible after making a telephone reservation with the Cavertitz municipality.
Also well worth seeing is the former manor house in the Lampertswalde district, which was built at the end of the 14th century. Over time, an old manor house from the 13th century developed into a manor house that was in the hands of important families such as the von Köckeritz and von Döring families. With its well-kept park, rare botanical treasures and a cozy castle café in the former palm house, the manor house invites you to take an idyllic trip into the past.
A detour to the three-arch bridge over the Dahle in Klingenhain, built from rocks, is also highly recommended. The round-arch bridge with one large and two small arches is a well-preserved and rare example of traffic technology of architectural significance. It continues to have a significant impact on the landscape and the village to this day. The former water mill from 1800, which is now used as a restaurant and is one of many beautiful restaurants with a long tradition in the region, is worth a visit. The school camp with bungalow village in the Olganitz district is ideal for school class and group trips.
