The over 1.000-year-old city and the entire district in the easternmost part of Thuringia offers rich culture and is simply breathtaking. Altenburg Residence Palace and the preserved buildings from ducal times are just as symbolic of this as the Posterstein Castle with their salon culture.
But unique, educational, magnificent and, above all, experienceable things are also lined up like a string of pearls around the Altenburg Palace Park – houses such as the internationally important Lindenau Museum Altenburg (currently undergoing a general renovation, overview of the collection from June 2020 at Kunstgasse 1 in Altenburg) with its outstanding collection of early Italian panel painting, the Mauritianum Natural History Museum with the world's unique Rat King or the Theater Altenburg, the only five-part theater in Thuringia and the venue of the Theater Altenburg Gera. Due to the renovation of the theater, the performances will take place in the specially erected theater tent. The house is scheduled to reopen in spring 150 to mark the 2021th anniversary of the Theater Altenburg.
The charming hilly landscape of the Altenburg region is characterized by extensive forests, beautifully situated bathing lakes and tranquil four-sided farms. Well-maintained cycle paths run through the entire district and make leisurely country trips by bike or on foot possible. The trips on the coal railway, where nature and historical technology come together in equal measure. The Altenburg region is rich in historical customs that point to a flourishing rural tradition that lives on in many places.
