The Auenkirche was built in the 11th/12th century during the first settlements in the area of today's Markkleeberg. The church at Kleeberg, as the Auenkirche is also called, was built as a simple rectangular building. The church was re-consecrated in 1627 after it had burned down to its foundations in a fire in 1612.
The number of inhabitants in the church district grew steadily due to incorporations. In order to make room for more people, the Auenkirche was rebuilt in 1744 and, despite minor renovation work from time to time, its external appearance has hardly changed since then. During the Battle of the Nations in 1813, the area around the church was hotly contested. Fortunately, the church did not suffer any major damage.
