Bennewitz

Bennewitz is one of the oldest settlements in the Mulde floodplain. Around 1200 years ago, the Sorbian Bono or Bonislaw the Elder settled here with his family and servants after the Germanic settlers had left their homes during the migration period. In the center of the village, visitors will find the oldest fortified church in the region. The church and tower are built in the late Romanesque style (around the 13th century). The old village near the church still has the Sorbian circular layout. Bennewitz was first mentioned in documents in 1335. Since 1974, it has been an independent political municipality, which today includes the districts of Schmölen, Pausitz, Bach, Rothersdorf, Neuweißenborn, Deuben, Grubnitz, Nepperwitz, Altenbach, Leulitz and Zeititz.

One of the main attractions of the town is the town hall, built in 1994, which is not only the seat of the mayor and the municipal administration, but also houses a library, a hairdresser's salon and a flower shop. The spacious town hall square with its impressive fountain is a popular meeting place for young and old.

The convenient transport connections make Bennewitz and the surrounding area attractive for both locals and day-trippers.

Large areas of the territory are part of the "Mittlere Mulde" landscape and nature reserve. To the southwest lies the little-known but charming Planitzwald with its rare plants and animals. Cyclists and hikers can enjoy idyllic routes along the Mulde and through the Planitzwald. The Waidmannsheil forestry farm is an ideal resting place in the middle of the forest. On nice days, its large outdoor seating area offers the necessary balance to everyday life and children can keep themselves busy on the spacious playground or on the nature trail.
