Delitzsch still has a fortification dating back to the beginning of the 15th century, consisting of a city wall, city towers, a kennel, a moat and a rampart.
The city lies in the northern part of the Leipzig region. The historic city center, with its small alleys and narrow streets, clearly reveals the settlement structure dating back to the 15th century. It is surrounded by an imposing 1,4 km long city wall with a water-filled moat, which was part of the former medieval fortifications. This wall was redesigned in the 19th century and has since then invited visitors to stroll around the picturesque old town along a shady promenade lined with linden trees. In addition to the two city towers, the spires of the medieval city church of St. Peter and Paul and the tower of the Baroque palace dominate the cityscape. The Baroque palace is one of the oldest palaces in Saxony and boasts a lovingly landscaped French-style garden. The interior furnishings of the palace rooms are also impressive. From the tower, you have a beautiful view of Delitzsch and the surrounding area. Also impressive are the Town Clerk's House and the Mayor's House with their magnificent entrance portals.
An insider tip during your tour is the German Cooperative Museum at Kreuzgasse 10. The cooperative idea was developed by the city's most famous son, Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch, and is on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The city park, the rose garden, and the nearby zoo invite you to stroll and relax. The lakes surrounding Delitzsch are easily explored by bike.
Tips:
A spectacle worth seeing: Every day at midday, when the bell strikes at 12 o'clock, Eve gives Adam an apple. The puppet show is located high up on the church clock of St. Peter and Paul. From its 50 m high tower, you have a beautiful view over Delitzsch.
And if you want, you can go on an individual tour of the old town "listening tour" – an app-controlled listening experience. At 13 stations - the so-called "listening points" - you can use your smartphone to access short audio contributions about the city and its rich history, or they are started automatically when the GPS signal on your smartphone is active. It is possible to get on or pause at any station.
