Fockeberg
The Fockeberg in the Südvorstadt district is the second highest point in the city of Leipzig. Its origins date back to the bombing of Leipzig during the Second World War. The rubble was transported from the city to the Südvorstadt to the present-day Fockeberg site via a rubble railway.
In the mid-1950s, the material for the construction of the Leipzig Central Stadium was removed, so that the height of the Fockeberg decreased considerably. Over the years, wild bushes and trees grew on the rubble and thus covered the hill in greenery. At the beginning of the 1980s, the Fockeberg finally received more targeted greenery.
Every year, many different events take place on the Fockeberg, such as the soapbox race "Prix de Tacot" and the Fockeberg time trial. In addition, the two neighboring parishes of St. Bethlehem and St. Hedwig hold an ecumenical service every year.
