Visible from afar, erected on the summit of the Rochlitz mountain, the 27-meter-high observation tower is one of the landmarks of the town of Rochlitz. Built entirely from local red porphyry tuff, it is an ambassador for the volcanic rock of the mountain, which was formed 275 million years ago and is unique in its color, shape and composition. In 1854, a committee decided to erect a monument to King Friedrich August II († 1855), who visited the mountain forest several times during his lifetime, to erect a monument to him on the Rochlitz mountain. Construction took four years. With the construction of the observation tower and the "Waldschlösschen" mountain café, tourism continued to increase significantly. When visibility is good, the tower offers a comprehensive panoramic view of the ridge of the Ore Mountains as far as the Battle of the Nations Monument in Leipzig or the Collmberg near Oschatz.
