Gaudlitzberg quarry

Geotope

The former quarry at Gaudlitzberg illustrates the high importance of regional rock extraction and is a popular destination in the Porphyrland Geopark.

The Gaudlitzberg quarry geotope is located just over a kilometer south of Röcknitz. The summit of the 220-meter-high Gaudlitzberg is covered with glacial loess. From 1890 to 1961, a pyroxene-poor to pyroxene-free variety of Hohburg quartz porphyry was extracted here. Due to its good cleavage, the porphyry was initially used for paving stones and later for crushed stone.
This porphyry was formed during the eruption of the Wurzen caldera 289–287 million years ago. However, magmatic flow structures are barely discernible.

Since 1997, the quarry on Gaudlitzberg has been developed as a climbing crag by the German Alpine Club. Numerous routes are available on the 20-meter-high rock face. From the summit of the mountain, there is an impressive view over the Hohburg region. Once a year, the highlight of the region takes place on Gaudlitzberg: the international Mountain Film Festival
