Germany's only publisher's museum with a freely accessible classicist private garden, the former country estate of the publisher Georg Joachim Göschen.

In 1795, Georg Joachim Göschen acquired a horse farm in Hohnstädt near Grimma. He used the house as a summer residence for the family. The property soon became a popular meeting place for writers, including Friedrich Schiller, and friends of the Göschen family. The property remained the property of Göschen's descendants until 1934, but the next owner, Renate Sturm-Francke, gradually restored it to the style of the Göschen era in order to present it to the public. The Göschen House has belonged to the town of Grimma since 1995. As Germany's only publishers' museum, it has since enriched the cultural life of Grimma.

As a museum rooms There are 4 rooms to view.
The former garden room with the clay oven from 1798 reflects the living and lifestyle of the Biedermeier period. Many objects from the Göschen family's possessions are on display. The bookcase contains a valuable collection of Göschen prints, as well as works by and about Johann Gottfried Seume. In a hexagonal extension from 1853, the Seumezimmer, which is furnished with classicist furniture and some original pieces from Seume's possession. In addition, portraits of Seume, views of Hohnstädt (as seen by Göschen and Seume), the earliest picture of the grave in Teplitz (today: Teplice/CZ) and maps of Seume's travels are on display. The fireplace room With its valuable ceiling painting, old furniture and other objects, it is now a popular meeting place for K–K–K afternoons: culture with coffee and cake. Weddings, concerts, readings and conferences also take place here. In a Growing Attached to the house is a collection of rural household items from the 18th to 20th centuries.

The 4.300 m² large Göschengarten is today the only classicist private garden from the period around 1800 that still exists in Saxony. Göschen used the existing terraces, built a theater stage and had a pavilion built in the shape of a temple, a birthday present for his wife Henriette. 

The Göschenhaus regularly hosts events, concerts and holiday projects for children.

Opening hours

The permanent exhibition and the Göschengarten can be visited with an audio guide; individual museum and garden tours are possible by prior booking.

Visiting the Göschengarten is free, but please note that the gardens can only be visited during opening hours.

Groups must register in advance. Appointments outside of opening hours can be arranged by arrangement.

By car: Follow the A14 to Wurzener Str./B107 in Grimma, take exit 14-Grimma on the A31. Follow Wurzener Str./B107, take Seumestraße to Schillerstraße

By public transport: Take the RB110 or bus line 690 to Grimma Bahnhof, then take bus lines 693 or 641 to Grimma, Hohnstädt, Wurzener Str. It is a 7-minute walk to your destination.
