Grimma District Museum
The district museum is located in the former first girls' school in the town of Grimma. In the Middle Ages, the museum grounds belonged to the Augustinian churchyard. The former monastery church of the Augustinian hermits next to the museum still dominates the townscape today.
The establishment of a museum in the town of Grimma resulted from an antiquities exhibition in the riding hall of the Hussar Regiment in the summer of 1900. Citizens interested in history had called for this presentation. They then joined together to form the History and Antiquities Association. In 1901, the Grimma City Council donated several rooms to the newly founded History and Antiquities Association for permanent use and to set up an exhibition on the town's history. The collection grew rapidly thanks to generous donations and active excavation work by the association's members.
The holdings range from prehistoric and early history to modern times. The focus of the collections is on the historical development of the city, the various crafts, the history of the Princely and State School St. Augustin and the history of the 2nd Hussar Regiment No. 19 in Grimma.
Other treasures include the supra-regional graphic arts collection, the expanded library with its approximately 10.000 books and documents as well as archives, a militaria collection, and important handicraft textiles, glass, porcelain and pewter objects.
