The church is located in the Laußig district of Gruna. It was rebuilt in 1715 on the remains of a previous church, known as St. Nicholas' Church. The church tower is a square building with a lantern on the onion roof, which turns into an octagonal part at the top. Often affected by floods and damaged by grenades in 1945, the church fell into increasing disrepair. At the end of the 1980s, initial efforts were made to save the church. However, it was not completely restored until after the Mulde flood in 2002. The church in Gruna is now one of two cyclist churches on the Mulde cycle path. During renovation work in 2003, gravestones belonging to the influential local noble family "von Spiegel" were recovered. They maintained contact with Luther and were involved in the implementation of the Reformation.
