Hartenfels Castle was the residence of the Ernestine Electors and a political center of the Reformation; it is considered the only surviving castle of the German Early Renaissance.
Anyone entering the castle courtyard for the first time is promised a magnificent spatial impression. In the 16th century, Hartenfels Castle was considered one of the most modern residential castles in Saxony. Closely connected to its history are the names Martin Luther, Frederick the Wise and John Frederick the Magnanimous.

In wing D of the castle, the Exhibition "Torgau. Residence of the Renaissance and Reformation" In Wing B, Elector Johann Friedrich the Magnanimous and his wife Sibylle lead the Exhibition "STANDARD. BIBLE FEST. DRINKING FEST."  through the history of the castle. Furthermore, the Große Wendelstein, the castle church, the lapidarium and the exhibition "Courage and Powerlessness" of the Torgau Memorial Site. Two brown bears live in the castle's bear pit, which not only delights the castle's young visitors.
