Hofkapelle Schloss Hubertusburg Wermsdorf

Attractions
The Catholic parish church of St. Hubertus (formerly the court chapel) is worth seeing, as it is the only room in the entire castle with its original furnishings. At the request of the chaplain at the time, it was spared from the looting of the "Hubertusburg" after the Seven Years' War by the troops of the "Old Fritz" (in retaliation for the devastation of "Charlottenburg" in Berlin - the favorite castle of the Prussian king - by Saxon Uhlan regiments).
The castle chapel takes up the entire left half of the main wing of the castle and is three stories high. Round-arched arcades inside support the galleries. They close off the nave in a semicircle with a niche for the altar. The gallery above this small apse provides space for the organ, and the one opposite takes up the entire width of the interior space for the royal box.
Those entering are surprised by the white and red marbled walls with their lavishly gilded ornaments. It is not marble, but artificial stucco marble (gypsum, lime, sand). The art of manufacturing was adopted from Italy. Italian artists and stucco workers worked here.
The former court chapel is dedicated to the patron saint of hunters, Saint Hubertus. Augustus III was a passionate hunter. The approximately 400 m² ceiling painting by Johann Baptist Grone (1682-1748) refers to the chapel's patron saint. The painting depicts the legend of Hubertus. Hubertus, dressed in hunting costume, kneels in a forest landscape in front of a stag standing on a rock, which carries a shining cross between its antlers. Reddish clouds cover the evening sky, in which angel figures can be seen. One of the angels carries a mitre and another a shepherd's staff, the symbols of episcopal dignity.
Visits to the chapel can be booked through the Riesa parish.
