March 11, 1829, the Berlin Singakademie under the direction of the Leipzig composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach Since then, Mendelssohn has been considered the "rediscoverer" of Bach's masterpiece. In this spirit, several events within the Bach Festival are dedicated to Mendelssohn, taking place in the Gewandhaus in Leipzig or the Mendelssohn House.
