An extensive collection of the legendary Schildbürger pranks is exhibited in the only Schildbürger Museum.
The Schildbürgers were really strange people, because they did everything wrong: they built a triangular town hall and carried the light inside in sacks, they pulled a cow up a wall with a rope to let it graze the grass, they sowed salt and harvested nettles, they sank a bell in the pond and cut a notch in the boat so they could find it again later and... and... and...

The Schildbürger book was first published 400 years ago and tells the story of 45 classic pranks. These are documented in detail in the museum, and the Schildbürger hiking trail takes you to the original locations.

On October 27, 1760, Field Marshal August Graf Neidhardt von Gneisenau was born in the "Weintraube" inn in Schildau. His mother had spent the night here while his father was moving troops during the Seven Years' War. On the way, she lost the newborn from her hands and a soldier found it on the road at the edge of town in the direction of Sitzenroda. He brought it back to the town and little Neidhardt spent the first eight years of his life here. The Gneisenau Museum in the museum house provides information about his achievements and successes as a brilliant general and military reformer!
