Porphyry quarry on Hainberg

The rock outcrop in Haingasse is a geological relic from the time of volcanism approximately 290 million years ago in the area of ​​today's Porphyrland Geopark. Millions of years later, the river's flow force carved its way into this porphyry rock, leaving behind steep cliffs.

The quarry belonged to the Colditz brickworks and quarrying operation Görling from 1938 onwards. Several previous owners can be documented for the neighboring brickworks since 1893, before Emil Rudolf Görling, who came from the Zittau area, took it over. Of his approximately twenty workers, five were employed in the quarry.

The quarry in Haingasse had probably been used for the extraction of building materials for a much longer period, e.g. for the construction of the castle, the city wall and residential buildings.
