The Richard Wagner monument in the form of a statue is located on the northwestern edge of the city center and commemorates the musician who was born in Leipzig in 1813. Another monument is located behind the Leipzig Opera in the green area by the Swan Pond. With his works, he is considered the most influential composer of the High Romantic period.
Wagner was 17 years old when his music was first performed in Leipzig at the Comödienhaus on Christmas 1830: the Overture in B-flat major. The monument, which was inaugurated in January 1983, bears a bronze bust of Wagner. It is a cast of the bust that the Leipzig sculptor Max Klinger (1857-1920) created in 1905 for the unfinished Wagner monument. In the Old Nikolai School you can visit the permanent exhibition "The young Richard Wagner from 1813 to 1834".
