The first mention of the church was in 1309. A preserved sacrament niche depicting Saint Nicholas and Saint Catherine with sword and wheel dates from the late 15th century. In 1706 the foundation stone was laid for a reconstruction of the church. In 1785 a fire broke out. The necessary repair work was completed in 1787. The pulpit altar with side communion passages probably dates from the first half of the 18th century. The current color scheme corresponds to the painting from the end of the 19th century. The Friedrich Gerhardt organ from around 1880 is on the west gallery. The patronage ended with the land reform in 1945. The church then became municipal property and was under the administration of the city of Schkeuditz from 2000. In 2005, the religious education teacher Henrick Mroska bought the church for a symbolic euro and founded the "Kleiliebenau Cultural and Pilgrimage Association"
Friedrich Gerhardt (1826 - 1922) from Kölleda learned organ building at ESHesse in Dachwig near Erfurt. He then worked for Kreutzbach (Borna), Buchholz (Berlin) and Schmidt (Oldenburg), among others. In 1853 he founded his own company in Kölleda. From 1863 to 1894 he had his workshop in Merseburg. The current list of works includes 48 organs. The organ in Kleinliebenau was built around 1880 using older parts (pedal wind chest and two wedge bellows). The contract has not yet been found. In 1918 the disposition was expanded to include the register Gambe 8'. I/6. In 2012 a fundamental restoration was carried out by the restoration workshop Joh.Lindner, Radebeul.
