In 1910, the Russian Empire also remembered the large part that Alexander I's troops played in the victory at Leipzig in 1813. Under the honorary chairmanship of Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, a building committee began its planning work. The city of Leipzig made the site available for the construction of a church. The architect was the renowned sacral architect Pokrowski, whose preparatory work was completed and implemented by the Leipzig architects Weidenbach and Tschammer. After the foundation stone was laid on December 28, 1912, the imposing building was consecrated as St. Alexi's Memorial Church on October 17, 1913 and has since commemorated the 22 Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of the Nations.
