The Saxon Wind Philharmonic Orchestra stands out from the German orchestra landscape with its unique wind instrumentation and has been impressing listeners for decades in the Leipzig cultural area (Leipzig district and northern Saxony), but also throughout Germany and Europe, with its extraordinary variety of sounds and leaves the audience with an unforgettable musical experience.
Lovers of classical music are always fascinated by the energy and passion that the musicians exude on stage and are carried away by the special sound.
Since 2021, Austrian-born Peter Sommerer has been chief conductor and artistic director of the Saxon Wind Philharmonic and, with his refreshing style, is setting new accents in the orchestra's musical work.
In 2023, the Saxon Wind Philharmonic Orchestra was awarded the top-class international music prize OPUS-KLASSIK (successor prize to Echo Klassik) as “Ensemble of the Year” for its recording production “La Valse” under the direction of Peter Sommerer. This award is another milestone in the orchestra's eventful history. The album was released in October 2022 on the “Hänssler Classic” label.
Symphonic Concerts
The Saxon Wind Philharmonic is characterized by a multifaceted sound spectrum, which is also made possible by the special arrangements for wind ensembles. Both contemporary original compositions and transcriptions of masterpieces from music history are interpreted in a work-appropriate manner. The various chamber music formations expand the artistic possibilities and enrich the high flexibility of the sound body.
Particularly impressive every year are the summer open-air concerts of the Saxon Wind Philharmonic at exceptional venues in the Leipzig region, such as the events at Trebsen Castle and Düben Castle or the Hayna Summer Classic on the lake stage on the Biedermeier beach of Schladitzer Lake.
At home in the region – celebrated internationally
The new building of the German Wind Academy in Bad Lausick in 2011 as a rehearsal and concert hall provided the Saxon Wind Philharmonic with a permanent home. The concert series there and in Trebsen, Bad Düben, Oschatz, Markleeberg, Schkeuditz and Colditz are crowd pullers and enrich the cultural life of the region.
In addition to the concerts in the Leipzig cultural area that have been established for many years, the ensemble's appeal extends far beyond the borders of the Leipzig and North Saxony districts. Due to the orchestra's special position as the only wind ensemble among the 129 German concert and theater orchestras and its growing artistic qualities, there are frequent concert tours throughout Europe, to China, Venezuela and Australia, which allow the orchestra to act as a musical cultural ambassador for the region.
